Working hours and pay in European Portuguese
This is lesson 2 of 5 in Unit 14, Work and study (Trabalho e estudos), an A2 unit in which you talk about your job and your studies, and describe how things used to be. The new words are a tempo inteiro (full-time), a tempo parcial (part-time), o salário (salary) and 4 more, practised in 10 example sentences. By the end you can say things like Nós ganhamos o salário mínimo (“We earn the minimum wage”). The unit’s grammar notes cover “Imperfect or perfect?” and “Trabalho, emprego and a tempo inteiro”.

- O salário é bom, mas o horário é mau.The salary is good, but the hours are bad.Mau (bad) is the adjective. Mal (badly) is the adverb.

- Eu tenho um contrato de um ano.I have a one-year contract.
- Eu estou de folga amanhã.I have the day off tomorrow.
- O Rui vai assinar o contrato amanhã.Rui is going to sign the contract tomorrow.Assinar = to sign.
- Nós ganhamos o salário mínimo.We earn the minimum wage.In the present, ganhamos has no accent. The past is ganhámos.
