Unit notes
Gostava de: I would like to
To talk about wishes, Portugal uses gostava de + infinitive: Eu gostava de viver no Porto. ("I'd like to live in Porto.") To ask a friend, say Gostavas de…? ("Would you like to…?")
Queria also means "I would like", and it is the usual choice when you ask for something in a shop or an office: Eu queria um café. Eu queria abrir uma conta. Gostava de is better for plans, wishes and dreams: Um dia gostava de conhecer os Açores.
- Eu gostava de aprender a conduzir.I'd like to learn to drive.
- Gostavas de vir connosco?Would you like to come with us?
Apetece-me: I feel like
To say what you feel like having or doing, use apetecer. It works like "to appeal to": the thing you feel like is the subject, and you are a small pronoun after the verb. Apetece-me um gelado. ("I feel like an ice cream.") Apetece-te ir à praia? If the thing is plural, so is the verb: Apetecem-me umas férias.
The pronoun moves in front of the verb after não, question words and words like também and só: Não me apetece. O que te apetece fazer? Também me apetece.
- Apetece-me um café.I feel like a coffee.
- Hoje não me apetece cozinhar.I don't feel like cooking today.
- Também me apetece.I feel like it too.
Acho que: giving your opinion
The most natural way to give an opinion is acho que ("I think that"): Eu acho que vai chover. Answer a question with Acho que sim ("I think so") or Acho que não ("I don't think so"). To ask, say O que achas? or, with extra respect, O que acha?
Na minha opinião ("in my opinion") sounds a little more formal. To agree, say Concordo or Tens razão! To disagree politely: Não concordo.
- Eu acho que sim.I think so.
- Eu concordo contigo.I agree with you.
Comparisons
Use mais… do que (more… than) and menos… do que (less… than): O comboio é mais caro do que o autocarro. For "as… as", use tão… como: O Porto é tão bonito como Lisboa.
A few comparatives are irregular: bom becomes melhor, mau becomes pior and grande becomes maior. For "smaller", Portugal usually says mais pequeno.
For "the best" or "the biggest", add the article: o melhor restaurante, a maior cidade.
- Lisboa é maior do que o Porto.Lisbon is bigger than Porto.
- Esta pastelaria tem os melhores pastéis de nata. This pastry shop has the best custard tarts.
Se calhar, porque, por isso
The most common way to say "maybe" in Portugal is se calhar, followed by an ordinary verb: Se calhar vou à praia. ("Maybe I'll go to the beach.") Talvez also means "maybe", but in a full sentence it needs a verb form you will learn later. On its own or with a time it is easy: Talvez amanhã.
To link ideas, use porque (because), por isso (so, that's why), mas (but) and então (so, then). "Why?" is Porque é que…? at the start of a question and Porquê? on its own.
- Se calhar ela está doente.Maybe she's ill.
- Está a chover, por isso vamos ao cinema. It's raining, so we're going to the cinema.
- Porque é que estás a aprender português?Why are you learning Portuguese?
